Finite element analysis for a coupled bulk–surface partial differential equation
<13>Many problems in biology, fluid dynamics, materials science, etc. require solutions to PDEs in a bulk region coupled to a surface PDE. This work is the first to formulate such a coupled problem in a rigorous functional analytic setting, allowing a finite element discretisation, with error estimates that are both optimal and robust. The work led to Ranner's EPSRC Doctoral Prize Fellowship and invited talks (e.g. ENUMATH 2011). As the only method based upon sound mathematical foundations, we expect this method, and its analytical setting, will become a standard tool in the study of coupled bulk-surface problems.
