Additional information

<27>Presents the first O(N) algorithm for the solution of (highly nonlinear) fully-coupled, full-system, elastohydrodynamic lubrication problems. Unlike alternative (surface-only) models, the full-system approach computes the elastic deformation in the interior of contacts (allowing interior stresses in components such as gear teeth, piston rings or even human joints to be computed easily). Previously, such an approach was prohibitively expensive (requiring sparse direct solution at each Newton iteration) compared to surface-only models: our solver now allows both surface friction and interior stresses to be computed with optimal complexity and has led to a follow-on CASE award from Procter and Gamble.
