Additional information

This paper highlights our reliance on fossil fuels and how it is growing, based on historical data. It also emphasises the shortcomings of resource-to-production ratios as a measure of the lifetimes of fossil fuels. In this context, it attempts to assess the potential for renewable energy resources to fulfil our energy needs before fossil fuels run out. An update on this paper since it was published in 2008 has been selected as an invited paper at the International Conference on Harnessing Technology in Oman, in December 2013.
