This paper presents an aqueous thermodynamic model of acetoclastic methanogenesis. It is significant in that it fully takes into account the electrolyte behaviour of the reaction medium with particular consideration of the sodium ion. It is particularly important as it provides a sound fundamental building block upon which empirical studies of anaerobic digestion can be built, thus enabling appropriate resolution of the factors contributing to the industrially critical problem of digester instability.
