Map-i - A solo exhibition and book of glass works at the Mercator Museum
Map-i is a body of work where mapping is used as a visual language. Panneels was invited to undertake an artists’ residency at Mercator Museum in Sint-Niklaas, Belgium in January 2012.
The aim of this research was to develop glass works that responded to the 16th century cartographer Mercator.
Panneels had a solo exhibition of the works made, at the Mercator Museum (24 Apr – 15 Dec 2013) including a large scale ‘Compendium’ piece consisting of an 18 piece glass wall map inspired by Gerardus Mercator’s World Map of 1569. This glass map is based on the dimensions and colouring of the original Mercator map and is overlaid with text from Mercator’s books. The exhibition was accompanied by a catalogue ‘Map I Mercator Revisited – 500 years of Mercator, a window on the world: the map as a metaphor’ published by Snoeck (ISBN: 978-94-6161-086-7) March 2013, 96 pages.
The project was financially supported by the Mercator Museum, Creative Scotland and the University of Sunderland.
The Map-i project featured at the international conferences: Mercator Revisited, University of Ghent, Mercator Museum, Sint-Niklaas April 2012; Mapping the Global Village, British Cartographic Society annual symposium, Basingstoke June 2012. The project features in the book ‘New Technologies in Glass’ by Dr Vanessa Cutler, published by AC and Black, 2012.
