Additional information

This is our second paper on in-situ formation of silver nanoparticles via light activation. Here we demonstrate the principle of metal enhanced fluorescence in another biocompatible polymer, a polysaccharide film where we show that precise control over the location of silver nanoparticles can be achieved. The practical demonstration presented here is an important advance in realising biosensing applications. One of the comments from a journal referee stated that ‘The use of lifetime measurements in biosensing is an important development...’ indicating the advance in knowledge our publication provides.
