Serious Games - A case study looking at the approaches to and responses to, this exhibition of participatory art
The chapter is a case study describing the curatorial processes and audience response to an exhibition of participatory art, curated by author (Serious Games) and marks a significant inclusion of a case study about a British exhibition of interactive new media art, in an international book, alongside other world-leading curators and academics in the field. The chapter offers methods to address a lack in the field of historicising art exhibitions, by sharing processes, press and audience information. This is an 8,000 word chapter with 4 illustrations in a paperback book, with an e-edition.
Graham was invited by the editor Christiane Paul, (published with Thames and Hudson, is Professor of Visual Arts at The New School and is Adjunct Curator of New Media Arts at the Whitney Museum of American Art), based on her previous research on curating new media art, and curating for Barbican/Laing art galleries.
Other chapters in the book include international authors and curators: Charlie Gere, Steve Dietz, Joasia Krysa, Jon Ippolito, Sara Diamond, Caitlin Jones, and Tilman Baumgärtel. Several of the reviews and citations mention the particular importance of the curatorial case studies in the book, and name Graham in particular (Ludovico 2009). “These notable curators and professionals unveil the practical outcomes, the successes and the failures of actual presentations.” (Murray 2009, p.115).
