On the condition assessment of cast iron trunk main: The effect of microstructure and in-service graphitisation on mechanical properties in flexure
This work was carried out as part of a major research programme with Thames Water to develop asset management tools for cast iron trunk mains. A comprehensive set of data are presented relating to the strength degradation of samples extracted from several mains and it is shown both experimentally and through simple models how the strength is affected by the morphology of the graphitisation. The understanding of the strength-defect size relationship afforded by this work is vital in informing a number of issues for the industry, in particular requirements for suitable non-destructive testing methodologies (Thames Water contact: Nic.Clay-Michael@thameswater.co.uk).
