Additional information

This was the first paper to systematically evaluate the minimum amount of water humans need to run a society rather than just meet basic health or domestic needs. This paper formed the basis of a cover feature article in New Scientist magazine and has since influenced discussions relating to human and society water requirements globally. For example, the World Energy Council cited the paper's estimate in its 2010 report “Water for Energy”. The estimate has been used in the evaluation of the likelihood of water conflict, assessing the impact of climate change and in urban planning.
