Additional information

This paper arose from a project funded by Rolls Royce plc to develop a predictive CFD tool for assessing oil leaks occurring in jet engines. The CFD was undertaken at Surrey with experimental validation at Sussex University. The CFD uses tools that were incorporated only recently into FLUENT to model the injection of sprays into gas flows. The recommendations and modelling of working practices arising from this research are now incorporated in company working practices and are routinely applied to all new products enabling Rolls-Royce to minimise the risk of fires, providing a significant enhancement to the safety of the product.
