Additional information

This research makes two important advances. It explains, and allows prediction of deswirled rotating cavity flow, and it establishes a general method of accounting for rotating flows in transient fluid system modelling. The study was conducted as part of an international collaborative PhD project, and the methods developed are used in Rolls-Royce where transient behaviour of industrial gas turbines and aeroengines is receiving increasing attention. An earlier paper (May and Chew, 2010, ASME Turbo Expo, paper GT-2010-22824) showed that rotational effects, neglected by other workers, were important in engine air system transients.
