On the occurrence of thermal explosion in a reacting gas: The effects of natural convection and consumption of reactant
For the first time, numerical results for thermal explosion occurring under the influence of natural convection with the consumption of reactant considered are presented. These results are also shown to be consistent with experimental data. Furthermore, a detailed discussion of the mathematical definition of an explosion is presented, thereby clarifying several inconsistencies in the literature. This theoretical study is of great relevance to industry, and is particularly important with regard to the storage of reactive chemicals. This work was presented at the 8th World Congress of Chemical Engineering (Montreal, 2009) and 4th European Combustion Meeting (Vienna, 2009).
