On the use of headline indices to link environmental quality and income at the level of the nation state

This paper focuses on the Environmental Sustainability Index (ESI). It was the first published study to use the ESI to explore the hypothesised 'Environmental Kuznets Curve' relationship between income and environmental quality at the scale of the nation state and contributed to my being involved on the scientific panel of the ESI with meetings held at Yale University. I helped provide technical input into the new version of the ESI (now called the Environmental Performance Index or EPI; http://epi.yale.edu) and this index is beginning to have some significant policy impacts across the globe (please see report at epi.yale.edu/community/blog/2013/04/11/new-report-examines-impacts-environmental-indicators-and-indices.)
