Additional information

Superplastic forming (SPF) is used to create lightweight high performance structures, mainly for automotive and aerospace applications. The authors develop a model to improve the heat management of SPF leading to process improvement opportunities. This technique is currently being developed further in novel experiments with hot gas, selective laser sintered pre-forms, and quartz halogen selective heating, to demonstrate the practical advantages for cost effective production of high integrity lightweight structures of complex shape, required for components such as heat exchangers for environmentally friendly aero-engines.
