This paper won the Institution of Civil Engineers Frederick Palmer prize in 2011 for the best paper on structures or buildings. It is a new and exciting area of design based on the experience of the authors. The principal author is the only academic in the UK majoring in modular construction, for which the UK is internationally leading, and is currently writing a book for Taylor and Francis on this subject. The co-author is from a leading firm of consulting engineers, who are using the information in developing their current designs.
