This paper describes a novel approach to the problem of processing the quantitative aspects of the vague descriptions used in spatial language. Using a multi-disciplinary approach it bridges the gap between people's qualitative descriptions and the quantitative representation required to automatically process natural spatial language. Initially presented at the International Conference on Spatial Cognition 2012 and then invited to contribute to the journal issue of the conference's best papers.
