Additional information

Because of this work, a prestigious Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Invitation Fellowship (S-13078) has been awarded to the lead author (Lang) supporting the further application of this technique to passive-damper-based building control for earthquakes. One objective is to resolve urgent challenges with retrofitting oil dampers in tall buildings in Japan (shaken hard by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake despite standing 800km from the epicentre). It involves collaboration with the world-leading earthquake engineer (Takewaki) and has great potential for design and placement of additional dampers to protect infrastructures undergoing severe loadings.
