Additional information

The paper introduces a technique that allows the observation of particles below the diffraction limit, in this case of 50nm diameter transparent particles and in a subsequent paper for 3nm diameter metallic particles, i.e. two orders of magnitude below the resolution of the microscope. This paper was selected as ‘Paper of the Month’ in October 2008 by Nano2Life network and the follow-up paper won 2008 Paper of the Year Award from European Commission Directorates-General Joint Research Centre (evidence file: patterson2-1.pdf).
