A method for measuring the extent and value of plastic strain in metals is developed which eliminates the need for a priori knowledge of yield strain and is based on measuring intra-granular distortion. The work is validated by comparison with theory and experiments using thermoelastic stress analysis. The work was the subject of a Window on Science visit to the US Air Force Research Labs (evidence file: patterson1-1.pdf) and led to an invitation to teach the topic to the Associazione Italiana per l’Analisi delle Sollecitazioni Graduate Summer School in 2013 (evidence file:patterson1-2.pdf).
