Additional information

The widely-used energy-based approach, using GIIc to predict initiation in composites was shown to not be applicable for a range of projectile sizes and test temperatures. The proposed strength-based approach is shown to be more appropriate. This work was presented at the International Centre for Mechanical Sciences (CISM) workshop on Impact Engineering of Composite Structures, held in Udine in July 2008. (Evidence File: Cantwell2-1).
