Real-Time Gamma Imaging of Technetium Transport through Natural and Engineered Porous Materials for Radioactive Waste Disposal
A new approach to rapid, non-invasive, imaging of radionuclide transport in porous materials, is described. The technique is utilised to show that cement barriers do not effectively retard the transport of oxidised technetium-99 (a long lived fission product). These results provide key evidence to support the assumption of unimpeded transport of oxidised technetium in the current UK safety case for radioactive waste disposal. In collaboration with the Radioactive Waste Management Directorate, this new approach is exploited in three projects to improve radionuclide retention in cement barriers (EP/L014041/1, £518k; NNL iCASE, ~£80k; University of Sheffield Fellowship, ~£300k).
