Additional information
This paper reports on self-assembly of a functionalized helicene. The fundamental novelty is twofold; this is the first example of a liquid crystal (LC) made up of helical tubes arranged on an ordered 3d lattice filled with positionally disordered molecules; furthermore, this is the first confirmed example of a hollow LC structure. The hollow helical channels may allow breakthroughs in enantiomeric separation, e.g. in drug purification. This work sparked a new collaboration with Imperial College on helicene-based circularly-polarized light emitters.
