The world’s first miniaturized piezoelectric goniometer fitting inside TEM specimen holders is introduced. The new technology allows operation as a “goniometer inside a goniometer”. Further significance includes rotation specific attachments of two specimens, and “on-demand” pickup of particles for tomography. The technology (patent application PCT/GB2009/050253) has attracted the interest of various TEM manufacturers/peripherals companies, with commercial products already announced, and it triggered an EPSRC/RCUK Basic-Technology Translation-Grant EP/G036748/1 (£728k).
