Exploiting multimode waveguides for pure fibre-based imaging
The article presents a novel approach utilizing disordered light within a standard multimode optical fibre to perform lensless microscopy. Modalities of bright- and dark-field imaging and scanning fluorescence microscopy are demonstrated at acquisition rates that allow observation of dynamic processes such as Brownian motion of mesoscopic particles. Furthermore, the paper presents generation of advanced light fields such as propagation-invariant beams and optical vortices to be used in future for fibre-based implementations of advanced forms of microscopy (super-resolution, light-sheet). The paper gained interest in many scientific and public media (physics.aps.org, Daily Mail, Scottish Express, Kingdom FM and others).
