This output was an invited contribution to a Special Issue on Multiscale and Micromechanical Modelling of Asphalt Mixes. The invitation to submit this paper was based on work undertaken in this area, presented as a Keynote Lecture “A Comparison of Discrete and Continuum Approaches for Modelling” at the 11th International Symposium on Advanced Technologies in Asphalt Pavements, Kangwon National University, Chun Cheon, South Korea, 3rd – 4th June 2010. This keynote built upon results first presented at an invited presentation entitled “Discrete Element Modelling of Asphalt” given at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research in Pretoria, South Africa in 2009.
