Romantic readers and transatlantic travel: Expeditions and tours in North America, 1760-1840
This monograph is a reception study based on extensive and time-consuming primary research. It draws on the systematic analysis of reviews of travel books in more than thirty Romantic-era periodicals, an archive that has received negligible critical attention. It also gathers and analyses the records of relevant private reading experiences from miscellaneous sources including letters, journals, commonplace books and marginalia, most of which are not accessible via electronic databases. Additionally, the author has had to familiarise himself with the voluminous travel literature to which these reading experiences relate and with a wide range of multidisciplinary secondary material.
