Additional information
Metal-cutting processes (such as turning) are a class of machine-tool process of great importance to global economy. Faster cutting can be achieved by increasing depth of cut and rotation rate of spindle up to well-known linear-stability limit above which tool-chatter damages workpiece. Unfortunately, the loss of stability is sub-critical implying that chattering may occur spontaneously before linear stability limit is reached. Paper develops new analytical tools for estimating extent of this unsafe "bistable" mode of operation.
