This work was amongst the first systematic attempts to understand the scientific relationship between the thermal properties of the materials commonly used in organic solar cells, the processes used during the fabrication of devices and ultimately the device performance. It sets a precedent for how to characterise new polymer materials which are being developed. Deeper understanding of the material properties which determine the final device performance will ultimately lead to the production of higher efficiency polymer based devices which could revolutionise the solar cell market. Since 2010 organic solar cells have doubled in efficiency from ~5% to ~10%.
