Additional information

Tissue engineered cartilage is important as a possible treatment for arthritis. Although it is straightforward to grow cartilage cells, it is difficult to produce mature tissue with adequate mechanical properties. In this study we show a method of inducing maturation of cultured cartilage and showed that its mechanical properties are similar to those of mature cartilage. This is a potentially important step towards a tissue engineering treatment for arthritis and in understanding the biology of articular cartilage. The paper has been cited by well known groups in Trinity College Dublin, Southampton and the University of Twente.
