Additional information

This research pinpointed the start of Ancient Egyptian civilisation, giving a scientific absolute date for the first time. It has important implications for the timing of state formation throughout the ancient world (contact details: Michael.dee@rlaha.ox.ac.uk). The work was widely reported in Nature (http://www.natureworldnews.com/articles/3834/20130905/researchers-develop-new-timeline-egypts-first-dynasty.htm - 05.09.13), New Scientist (http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn24145-carbon-dating-shows-ancient-egypts-rapid-expansion.html#.UlUaxxZeIQ0 - 04.09.13), the Independent (http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/new-date-established-for-the-origin-of-ancient-egypt-8798483.html - 04.09.13), other national and international newspapers and the Today Programme (e.g. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-23947820). It led to the successful application for a further Leverhulme grant for work in this area (Leverhulme Fellowship £87,000)
