Additional information

The paper reports on the properties of a novel coating which utilises the concept of low shear strength interfaces produced by kinetic segregation of carbon in nanoscale multilayer structured PVD coating. This concept broadened the long-standing view of the physics of superlattice coatings; that usable interfaces must be atomically sharp and produced via a coherent growth mechanism. Low shear strength interfaces change the wear mechanism in multilayer coatings essential to avoid built-up edge formation when machining aerospace-grade Ti- and Al- alloys. Sandvik, invested in two PhD students at MERI to further develop these high demand coatings.
