English abstract

This essay is a contribution to the history of film criticism, providing an overview of the British tradition from its beginning to the present day. The discussion is constructed in three parts: the origins of film criticism in relation to the emergence of a cultural discourse around film as an entertainment, and later as an art form; the glory years of film criticism in the 1920s through to the 1950s, when specialised film critics became revered figures in the press; finally, the case of Sight & Sound highlights the evolution of film criticism from the 1960s to the present.
