An evaluation of heat partition in the high-speed turning of AISI/SAE 4140 steel with uncoated and TiN-coated tools
The integrity of tools is the key issue in High Speed Machining (HSM), which concerns manufacturing industry. It is dependent on the amount of heat entering the tool during machining. Hence, the design of new tools requires information on its heat partition characteristics. These are established here through a novel combined experimental-finite element approach. Two major tool developers, Sandvick Coromant, and Teer Coatings Ltd, have supplied tools for this research and this interaction has led to the design of new multi-layer coated tool systems. The new technique has also been subsequently adopted by other researchers in HSM.
