Additional information

This paper represents collaborative investigation under the EPSRC SUPERGEN Biological Fuel Cell project. This paper shows for the first time the analysis of the microbial population dynamics of a tubular microbial fuel cell (MFC). This provides a methodology to use biological tools as part of an operational strategy for optimising the performance of MFCs. The paper highlights the need for the international BES community to further develop more discriminatory analytical tools for the analysis of microbial populations. The work has led to collaboration with a Korean leader in the field of molecular pyro-sequencing.
