This paper outlines the use of nanoporous aluminosilicate materials in Friedel-Crafts reactions of indole to produce bisindolylmethane materials. These transformations employ acetals in place of the more traditionally used carbonyl compounds which proved to be un-reactive under the reaction conditions. This difference in reactivity was exploited to develop a tandem acetalisation/Friedel-crafts protocol in which the acetals are generated in situ and undergo subsequent Friedel-Crafts reaction to produce the final product.
