Additional information

Volatile fatty acid (VFA) species and concentration measurement is an important and critical performance parameter in anaerobic processes for waste treatment, energy generation or production of bulk chemicals. We demonstrated here, the first microbial biosensor array which is capable of determining both the concentration and species of VFA and the advantage of cyclic voltammetry over columbic efficiency for rapid discrimination between the different VFA species. This offers the prospect of a low cost VFA species specific sensor for industrial process monitoring compared to the existing complex measurement techniques. EPSRC (EP/H019480/1) funded and in collaboration with Kim (Pusan National University, S.Korea).
