Double-weighted statement

Africa: the Politics of Suffering and Smiling (2009) proposes an entirely new way of approaching the study of contemporary African societies. It draws on ten years of research in Africanist social sciences, including work in a dozen countries in West, East and Southern Africa. It relies on an exhaustive analysis of existing Africanist sources, in particular detailed anthropological and historical case studies. It is the first Africanist book to apply the lessons of comparative analysis to offer a fresh and critical political history of the continent by means of an enquiry into how ‘ordinary’ people understand and participate in politics.
