On What it Might Mean to be Spinning

This video work, comprising performance, poetic writing and music, is the latest in an ongoing collaboration with David Prior, that is concerned with the compositional possibilities in working music and writing out from common 'performed' source material. In each case, the dynamics of a performed action (simple and repeated), in this case 'spinning', is used to shape the composition and thematic of concurrent writing and music making processes. The piece was first presented at the Jill Cragie cinema at Plymouth University as part of a public programme of interdisciplinary musical work, co-produced by Peninsular Arts and The Interdisciplinary Centre for Computer Music Research. This last piece has been presented at a number of international festivals, inclusing the 2012 Femanagh Festical. As with all my research (both scholarly and practice-led), this submission and the wider body of work from which it's drawn, reflect and contribute to my involvement in the field of Performance Writing. The submitted film was also presented in two more explicitly research orientated contexts, firstly, the Translated Acts seminar programme co-convened by Caroline Bergvall and Carol Watts at the Centre for Contemporary Poetics Research at Birkbeck (http://ualresearchonline.arts.ac.uk/2120/23/Translated_Acts_3_Promo.pdf), and secondly, at a conference event produced through the Judith E Wilson Fund at The University of Cambridge, convened by Dr Drew Milne, and also featuring Joan Retallack, Allen Fisher, Redell Olson, Alec Finley and John Hall.
