Additional information

The UK boasts worldwide the most advanced design guidelines for stadia under crowd dynamic loading featuring explicit human-structure interaction model, and more realistic and economic designs (http://www.safetyatsportsgrounds.org.uk/sites/default/files/publications/dynamic-performance-requirements.pdf). This is the first journal paper to verify experimentally the guidelines, which was key to their widespread adoption by industry. For this a unique and worldwide largest database of dynamic testing results from real-life stadia structures, funded by EPSRC (GR/S73761/01 and GR/N38206/01) and industry, was used. The guidelines have been used worldwide, including all London 2012 venues. Expedition Engineering saved 400t of steel by implementing the guidelines on the Velodrome (contact: A.Weir, andrew.w@expedition.uk.com).
