Additional information

This paper relaxes the system constraints required in other comparable observer schemes allowing robust fault reconstruction to be applied to a wider class of engineering systems. Detection schemes using these ideas have been implemented and tested on Airbus's flight simulators in Toulouse during the FP7 ADDSAFE project and proved to be the most robust of all the schemes tested (Philippe Goupil: philippe.goupil@airbus.com). These ideas also form the basis of the EPSRC grant "Robustness and Adaptivity: advanced control and estimation algorithms for the transverse dynamic atomic force microscope" (EP/I034831/1). This research was the focus of an invited plenary at SAFEPROCESS'12.
