The volume is the outcome of an international conference (‘Logos’) co-organised by King’s and the Hellenic Society in 2004. From a large number of submissions, the contributions to the volume were selected jointly by the two co-editors, Silk and Professor Georgakopoulou. Silk was responsible for the co-ordination (‘house-style’) of the whole volume and for the close editing of the chapters by Colvin, Strobel, Thoma, Ricks, Hirst and Beaton, and he himself contributed the opening chapter, ‘The Invention of Greek’ (pp. 3–31).
