English abstract

This article looks at charity as practised by emperor in the Byzantine Empire in an effort to distinguish fact from pious fiction. Among the key sources explored in more detail are legal texts, mirrors of princes and imperial ceremonial. The article makes clear that imperial charity is only rarely direct; in most cases Byzantine emperors gave the Church the authority and the funds for charitable actions
