Acoustic response variability in automotive vehicles
Significance of output:
This is the first and largest (>1100 Ford vehicles) study to date, superseding the first investigation almost 20 years ago which was affected by significant temperature variations. The data analysis, supported by an EPSRC CASE award, carefully eliminated anomalies and the importance of fuel type, engine under load, tyre and wheel type was established. The statistical distributions determined to be the best fits are subsequently useful for design, quality control and knowledge of production variability, as they cover the acoustic transmission path in addition to the structure borne contributions. Factors which affect the interior noise for vehicles are identified.
