Double-weighted statement
This book as a result of nearly three years’ work and was supported by an Alexander Von Humboldt research grant and a DAAD travel grant. It is based on thorough analysis of Fried’s 1000+ poems and on extensive research in areas such as Aristotle’s rhetorics, exile studies and contemporary German cultural history, to set Fried’s work in detailed context. The volume advances an understanding of Fried’s poetics that identifies as fundamental a structuring tension between terror and love, and relates this to wider 20th century German and Austrian culture. It is 58,447 words long.
