English abstract

French. This historical article explores the economics of theatre and the production of shows in the Eighteenth Century and assesses the management of court entertainments by Denis Papillon de la Ferté. Luxury goods and entertainments were part of a political and economic strategy related to foreign affairs and commerce. I argue that if the sumptuousness of shows had to mirror how prosperous the Monarchy was that it is interesting to note that Papillon de la Ferté tried to save money as much as possible by recycling props, dresses and sets and by using fake stones or jewellery to impress.
