English abstract

Following the 2011 report of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, high-rise buildings have been rapidly increasing worldwide. This paper reviews the evolution of tall-building structural systems, proposing that it is impossible to devise a new classification system for primary structural types. While most structural systems are discussed, the emphasis in this review paper is on current trends such as outrigger systems and diagrid structures. Drawing from the past and through an analysis of masterpieces by Fazlur R. Khan and Pier Luigi Nervi, it also describes the evolution of these two systems.
