The decision support method proposed in this paper was tested by comparison with the decision process used to specify an automated system at Rolls-Royce (contact: Senior Manufacturing Engineer at the Inchinnan plant during the project). The two approaches agreed although the new tool was felt by RR to add value by highlighting human factors that might otherwise have been ignored.
