Influence of electrical fields (AC and DC) on phytoremediation of metal polluted soils with rapeseed (Brassica napus) and tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum)
Developed from an English-German collaboration this study has already been used by groups working in China, Japan, Indonesia, USA, Europe and summarized in high-ranking reviews published in Journal of Hazardous Materials in 2011 and Chemosphere in 2013 (the latter by the authors of the definitive reference work on electrochemical technologies for soil, sediment, and groundwater pollution remediation http://eu.wiley.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-0470383437.html). This paper provides a potential solution to a critical limit of the practical application of phytoremediation, increasing biomass productivity and removal rates for a range of common contaminants and plants through electrokinetic enhancement with AC, DC and DC with switched polarity.
