Additional information

The remarkable discovery reported in this paper, that magnetic reconnection happens on Venus, a planet that has no intrinsic magnetic field have generated significant debate in the academic community and caught the attention of the media. The findings were picked up by major science journals including Nature editorial (www.nature.com/news/magnetic-storms-spotted-on-venus-1.10397) and Scientific American and featured on news websites around the world (e.g. NBC site _ http://www.nbcnews.com/id/46971565/ns/technology_and_science-space/t/venus-may-have-auroras-without-magnetic-field/). This study would not have been possible without the magnetic field data cleaning methodology developed by M. Balikhin, which involves Fuzzy Logic, nonlinear modelling and pattern recognition.
