Additional information

This paper presents the first clinical decision support system for critically-ill patients in ICU that combines imaging data with blood gas information in a hybrid fashion. This is an invited contribution to a special session on “new and emerging technologies in bioinformatics and bioengineering” based on ‘the best papers presented’ at an IEEE international conference. The research study exploits a Sheffield University invention relating to Electrical Impedance Tomography for 2D-imaging of patient’s lungs. The model, used to predict the patient’s state prior to suggesting ‘optimal’ therapy, was validated using real data from more than 70 patients.
